Currently, the NGV Co-Op is available only in Arizona, Nevada, and California but may expand at a later date. In this time of rapidly rising fuel costs, tight budgets, and vehicle emission regulations, purchasing natural gas vehicles is a sound economic and environmental decision. Purchasing natural gas vehicles is also an ideal way for fleets to reduce emissions from their vehicles. Exhaust emissions from a typical NGV are much lower than those from gasoline-powered vehicles. Natural gas vehicles also produce far fewer urban emissions than diesel vehicles. The NGV Co-Op team is currently developing vehicle specifications that will be sent to vehicle dealers. San Diego Gets $9 Million for New Natural Gas Buses
San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System will be getting $9 million in state bond money to replace 50 aging diesel-burning buses with new compressed natural gas (CNG) models. The funds are part of the statewide distribution of $136 million in transportation bond money announced by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who noted that such funding "will encourage the use of public transit and give Californians an alternative to rising gas prices." "With the money we're receiving . we are able to retire buses that operate on diesel that are well beyond their useful life and have become very expensive to maintain with newer buses . that burn compressed natural gas for the benefit of the environment," said Harry Mathis, chairman of the Metropolitan Transit System board of directors. SDMTS officials said the 50 new buses will bring the system's fleet to nearly 100% CNG-powered.

Philippines Seeks '100% Use' of CNG Public Transport by 2010
To help ease the burden of the continuing rise in the price of oil on the Philippine's public transport sector, the Philippine Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFR is gearing up for the use of 100% compressed natural gas (CNG) in public utility vehicles by 2010. "By 2010, all buses, taxis, and jeepneys [the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines] should be CNG operated," said LTFRB Chairman Thompson Lantion at a recent press conference. "This will be our direction. We will no longer be dependent on diesel because CNG is made locally, so it is cheaper," he added.

Still the Cheapest and the Cleanest! Natural Gas for Vehicles
It is estimated there will be 65 million natural gas vehicles around the world by the year 2020. (IANGV)
I guess our American manufacturers are going to be a few more years behind the curve before they catch on, like normal.
Fueling at home still gives the best savings in cost and emissions with a natural gas vehicle! Under $1.50 per gallon!
A recent study showed that a municipality could save $7000.00 per year for each garbage truck that was run on natural gas instead of diesel.

Brazil, Rio de Janeiro The greenhouse gas benefits of NGVs do indeed extend beyond carbon dioxide reduction and remain even with methane and nitrous oxides taken into account, says a new study backed by IANGV and the Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance. While the CO2 benefits have been well proven, question marks remained over the impacts of emissions of methane (CH4), which remains in the atmosphere for 21 years, and NOx (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas with a 310 year life. The study was conducted and presented here at NGV 2008 by consultant Alex Lawson, formerly of Teleflex-GFI, and concludes that the impact of these from natural gas vehicles is negligible, accounting for less than 3% of total greenhouse gas emissions. The study also concluded that on a carbon emissions basis, driving a natural gas vehicle was equivalent to a 30% efficiency improvement over driving a gasoline vehicle. The study was conducted using a range of converted bi-fuel gasoline/natural gas vehicles and is due for public release in July 2008. Swedish Biogas Company Expands To Michigan
The city of Flint, Michigan and an alternative energy company, Swedish Biogas International, announced a joint plan to build a plant to convert waste from the city's wastewater facility into biomethane. Flint would be the first location for the Swedish company, which hopes to build plants nation-wide, said Peter Unden, the CEO of Swedish Biogas. The project will receive $6 to $10 million in start-up money from federal and state grants as well as Sweden and private money. Initially, the biomethane would fuel Flint's fleet of municipal vehicles. The partners hope spin-off businesses will grow up around the operation to convert engines and gas tanks on private vehicles to biomethane and provide a source for new jobs. "We can generate clean energy out of waste and create new jobs for Flint," Flint Mayor Don Williamson said. "This is the biggest no-brainer in the history of mankind," said James R. Hiendlmayr, owner of Bio-Gas Technologies in Norwalk, Ohio. "Why waste something you can put to beneficial use?"
Buses, taxis, garbage trucks and cars in Sweden run on biomethane, making up about 2 percent of the country's transportation fuel, Unden said. There are about 100 biomethane fueling stations across Sweden. A 2007 report estimated that 12,000 vehicles are being fueled with biomethane worldwide, with 70,000 biomethane-fueled vehicles predicted by 2010. Europe has most of these vehicles.

Fresno California to Trial First CNG Hybrid Electric Plug In Garbage Truck
Odyne Corporation announced that the City of Fresno has held a press conference to debut and demonstrate the world's first compressed natural gas refuse vehicle equipped with Odyne's PHEV technology. The event was held in Fresno, Calif., and in attendance were Fresno Public Utilities Director, Rene Ramirez, Fresno Council of Governments Planner, Jason Paukovits, and City of Fresno Deputy Mayor, Jeff Eben, who acknowledged the City of Fresno's Department of Public Utilities for their extensive legwork necessary to accomplish the project. "This truck is part of a citywide energy conservation strategy," says Eben. "There is an expected 90 percent reduction in smog-forming emissions." The refuse collector has a 10 mile engine-off, zero-emissions driving mode of operation, and has the ability to plug into the grid, fully recharging its batteries and offsetting its fuel consumption. It consumes clean CNG fuel as opposed to diesel, making it the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) CNG refuse collection truck. The vehicle will quietly navigate through residential neighborhoods, collecting trash, while not polluting the environment and not consuming imported fuels. Odyne believes that this is the product of the near future and Fresno has set the standard for other cities to follow. Also on hand at the kick-off event was Odyne Executive Vice President, Gus Sfakianos, who states, "Fresno's enthusiasm and desire for clean alternative fuels and plug-in hybrid systems has lead the way for the deployment of the world's first plug-In CNG refuse collection vehicle. Four years ago, when the rest of the country was trying to understand the future potential and advantages of a plug-in hybrid, the City of Fresno, with its environmentally progressive staff, wrote a specifications document for just such a vehicle. Odyne responded by developing a rechargeable electric hybrid drive system, that has become part of a citywide energy conservation strategy, which will also serve to improve air quality." Odyne's plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain and battery control technology enables buses and trucks to operate more efficiently. By plugging the vehicle into the grid, which may be done at low-cost, off-peak hours, the operator substitutes electricity for more expensive vehicle fuel, displacing the imported oil used in diesel or gasoline powered vehicles, and reduces emissions; the hybrid technology provides increased fuel efficiency, and lower maintenance expenses.

Sterling Truck Corp. has launched its first natural gas-powered vehicle-a Sterling Set-Back 113 tractor equipped with a Cummins Westport ISL 6 powerplant. According to the OEM, the truck is ideal for port operations, as well as natural gas utilities and municipalities and can save up to $6,000 in annual fuel and operating costs per truck. Sterling noted that customers in states such as California will also benefit from tax incentives for alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, the OEM said fuel providers also take advantage of these incentives, which means that accessibility to natural gas fuel is on the rise. "Due to deterioration in air quality, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have embraced the use of alternative fuels in commercial vehicles," said Richard Shearing, manager of product strategy for Sterling. "At the same time, utility companies and municipalities throughout North America have shown increased interest in green transportation technology. "By introducing the Set-Back 113 with natural gas, we're giving our customers a hard-working truck that reduces both costs and environmental emissions." According to Sterling, the Cummins Westport ISL G, an 8.9 liter stoichiometric cooled-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engine, offers the lowest emissions available in the industry without sacrificing top-level performance and efficiency. Available in ratings up to 320 hp, the ISL G already meets EPA '10 standards with 85%t lower NOx emissions than the C Gas Plus engine and it features the highest power-to-weight ratio in class with an optimized turbocharger, said Sterling. The ISL G also features a maintenance-free exhaust system with a three-way catalyst (TWC) and no further technology or aftertreatment will be required to meet the 2010 emissions standards.
