Fleet Conference Held on Natural Gas Vehicles - Yes NGV's save a substantial amount on fuel costs!

The potential to cut fuel costs by more than half brought about 150 fleet managers and others from across the Southeast this week to a daylong seminar on natural gas at the Lutheridge Conference Center in Ashville NC, as reported by the Ashville Citizen-Times. Participants in the seminar got an up-close look at trucks and cars owned by the City of Asheville, UNC Asheville and Mission Hospitals that run on compressed natural gas (CNG). In the afternoon, they were shuttled over to tour Altec-Eco Corp.'s vehicle conversion plant and its fueling station in Arden. March 27,2008

Northern California Utility Draws on Renewable Natural Gas

Burning natural gas is not normally seen as a use of renewable energy, but a project underway in northern California is adding a renewable dimension to this traditional fossil fuel. In early March, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) began injecting biogas from manure into its natural gas pipeline in Fresno County. The 5,000-cow Vintage Dairy, located near the town of Riverdale, is flushing the manure from its cows into a covered lagoon that is more than three stories deep, with an area of nearly five football fields. Microbes in the oxygen-free environment of the lagoon convert the manure to methane through a process called anaerobic digestion. Methane from the lagoon is scrubbed and pressurized by BioEnergy Solutions and then injected into the PG&E pipeline. Under a long-term contract, BioEnergy Solutions plans to deliver up to 3 billion cubic feet of renewable natural gas to PG&E each year. PG&E is also investigating its own methods of generating biogas. See the PG&E press release and the BioEnergy Solutions Web site.

PG&E will soon be increasing its supply of renewable natural gas, according to Environmental Power Corp. (EPC). EPC is using anaerobic digestion to create renewable natural gas from manure and agricultural wastes at its Huckabay Ridge facility in Stephenville, Texas. The facility began full commercial operation in January and is expected to produce 635 billion Btu of natural gas per year, which is equal to about 616 million cubic feet. The natural gas is currently being delivered to the Lower Colorado River Authority, but as of October, it will be delivered to PG&E under a 10-year contract. See the EPC press releases on reaching commercial operation and on the PG&E contract.

!**Venezuela Will Import 200,000 CNG Conversions, Will Require All New Cars to Run on Natural Gas Starting in July**!

Minister of Energy & Petroleum, Rafael Ramirez announced Venezuela will import 200,000 natural gas conversion kits and require they be installed on all new vehicles sold in the country starting in July of this year.  Both domestic and imported vehicles, The kits will be either installed at the end of the factory assembly line or by licensed after market up-fitters before delivery of the vehicle to the purchaser.  Venezuela recognizes the cost savings and emissions benefits by using natural gas for vehicle fuel for its citizens.

Munich - Cars converted to run on LPG (liquid petroleum gas) or CNG (natural gas) are just as safe as conventional petrol- driven vehicles, according to a crash test conducted by Germany's automobile association (ADAC). Test engineers crashed an Opel Kadett travelling at 60 kilometres an hour into the rear of a standing Opel Astra station wagon with a full LPG gas tank in the spare wheel compartment. The testers wanted to find out whether the LPG tank and hoses connected to it would remain intact in a realistic crash situation or cause an explosion. A similar crash test was conducted with an Opel Zafira CNG that was crashed into a wall. In both tests, the engineers found no higher fire risk than in standard vehicles. Despite massive damage to the vehicles the tanks remained intact. When testers started a fire beneath the vehicles the safety valves worked as constructed, releasing gas in small dosages so that it could burn and avoid an explosion. The crash test confirmed similar tests conducted in Italy, France and the Netherlands. Testers concluded there was no higher fire risk with CNG and LPG vehicles. In the Zafira CNG the ADAC testers gave the vehicle nine stars out of a possible 16 compared to ten points for the standard vehicle. "The result is comparable to the standard vehicle," the testers concluded.

Four more compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure jobs have been awarded in the state, to Southern California's Gas Equipment Systems, Inc. (GESI). The projects include various supply, construction and management aspects for re-fuelling stations in Pasadena, Tulare, Beaumont and San Juan

Costa Rica Bio Gas

In Costa Rica, residents of Santa Fe are using biogas on a more personal level, for everyday cooking. The Santa Fe Biogas project, in its initial stages, was simply a long list of concerns in the community communicated at the Women's Group meetings. "How can we avoid buying expensive tanks of gas or the inhalation of smoke in the kitchen?" the women asked themselves. Several women in the group had heard of farmers who use biogas as a solution to both problems. Biogas made from biodigesters that process manure are also able to convert manure into fertilizer. The Women's Group took advantage of a UN Women's Group Grant that would cover most of the expenses of a project that would supply a biodigester to the people in the community who were in need of one.

The women quickly organized themselves to start learning about biodigester construction and maintenance with the help of the local Agriculture Ministry. Once they felt comfortable with the design they chose they started building their first prototype so that their grant proposal had a proven concept to show. After submitting their proposal they were informed that out of the nine finalists, that their proposal was the one chosen for the grant. They organized the purchase and delivery of all the materials necessary to build the biodigesters. Each of the families that received materials built their own biodigesters with the expertise gained from the sessions with the Agriculture Ministry that the Women's Group organized. At the project's completion, all 16 biodigesters were built, offering energy independence to the rural family.

NGV's Ease Squeeze on City Budget
Source - KFSN Fresno, CA

The California city of Fresno is celebrating it's investment decision of five years ago, when it switched some of it's fleet to natural gas. KFSN reports with the price of diesel fuel skyrocketing so far this year the city has been forced to pay out $400,000 dollars more to fuel its fleet than budgeted but, "we would have been $1.2 million over had we not switched to liquid natural gas (LNG)," said Joseph Oldham, Fresno Fleet Supervisor. "Now we've seen not only emissions benefits but cost savings by running alternative fuels."

Compared to the typical diesel garbage truck the city's 80 natural gas powered ones are not only cheaper to run they're quieter and don't pollute the air as much. By the Year 2010 Fresno plans to replace its' entire fleet of garbage trucks by ones that run on natural gas, on the way to even bigger savings down the road.

Fresno isn't alone in the struggle to save on fuel costs. Clovis is reportedly about $140 thousand-dollars over budget. Next month the city will start replacing older street sweepers and then garbage trucks with newer ones that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) pumped right into the corporation yard by utility PG&E.

Ron Wheeler, Clovis Fleet Manager: "For every dollar of fuel they burn, they're going to save over two dollars a gallon compared to diesel at today's prices."

Major Step to Make All Peruvian Trains Natural Gas-Powered

Source - NGVAmerica
Friday, 28 March 2008
We've talked about the CNG Train in Peru before, now they will make all their railroad engines Natural Gas

The president of the Peruvian Environment National Congress, Manuel Bernales Alvarado, has proposed that, in order to improve their efficiency and emissions, all trains in Peru should operate on natural gas, including the railroads that will be constructed in the Amazonian region. Bernales Alvarado especially addressed the Brazil-Peru railroad project that will link the northern ports of Paita and Bayóvar with the Brazilian locality of Cruceiro do Sul.  This project was unanimously approved by the National Congress on March 13th.  Natural gas trains for the Amazon were already discussed at the First Congress about International Environmental Science called "Amazonia and Sustainable Development."  It was stated that natural gas use must be a fundamental requirement for the approval of the environmental impact statement for the railroad project because it saves energy, reduces pollution and improves the protection of the Amazonian ecosystem.
