General Motors plans LPG, CNG vehicles In India, Not USA
General Motors India said it is working on LPG and CNG variants for at least three models of vehicles.
P. Balendran, vice president (corporate affairs) of the company, said compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas experiments are being carried out on the compact car Chevrolet Spark; upper premium compact segment car Chevrolet Aveo U-VA; and midsize car Chevrolet Aveo.
"We have been working on alternative fuel technology for some time, and the recent fuel price hike has expedited the process," he said, while declining to comment on the launch date. Balendran said it is too early to talk about the date of launch as certain tests and trials are to be done.
The Chevrolet Spark, the popular small car from the GM stable, will be the first model among the three to be run on alternative fuel. The LPG version of the Spark is reportedly in the final stage of development. Even if the company has not assigned any deadline, alternative variants of all three models are expected to hit the market within a year, The Business Line newspaper reported Friday

The Philippine government announces they will loan up to 22 million dollars for conversions
MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippine government said on Monday it would lend up to 1 billion pesos ($22 million) to owners of taxis and buses to convert their diesel engines and cut their reliance on costly imported fuel. Concerned about the political fallout from soaring inflation, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is trying to alleviate the impact on poor Filipinos from rising prices of fuel, food and other basic commodities. "They can use (the money) to finance the engine conversion from diesel to liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas and other alternative fuels," Arroyo said at a launch for more environmentally friendly public vehicles. Annual inflation is expected to keep rising after hitting a nine-year high of 9.6 percent in May. International oil prices at more than $130 a barrel, double what they were a year ago, are one of the main culprits. The Philippines imports more than 90 percent of its fuel needs, helping the trade deficit to balloon to $2.1 billion in the first three months of the year compared to a $181 million surplus a year ago. Arroyo said she wanted 10,000 taxis, buses and jeepneys or mini-buses, to use cheaper and cleaner alternative fuels. Petron, the country's largest refiner, sells diesel at 49.39 pesos ($1.10) a liter compared to around 31 pesos for a liter of LPG. Last month, Arroyo scrapped her long-held goal of a balanced budget this year and said she would raise spending to support flagging economic growth and overburdened consumers.
A project by California company FirmGreen will process raw landfill gas into compressed natural gas for use in fleet vehicles in Ohio. The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and other area fleets will take advantage of the cleaner, cheaper fuel. The project will initially produce 30,000 Gasoline Gallon Equivalents (GGE) per day of gCNG-the company's brand name for compressed natural gas from renewable resources. SWACO's fleets are expected to achieve a net savings of $60,000 per day, based on a comparison between the recent $4.75-per-gallon-cost of diesel fuel in Ohio and the company's GGE cost of less than $2.75 per gallon. Vehicles fueled with natural gas produce 93-95% fewer emissions than similar petroleum-fueled vehicles.
