Natural Gas Vehicle Cooperative Launches

Pasadena, Calif. - CALSTART (www.calstart.org) - North America's leading advanced transportation technologies consortium - is pleased to announce the formation of the Natural Gas Vehicle Purchasing Cooperative (NGV Co-Op).  As fleets and drivers face record-breaking gasoline and diesel prices, natural gas vehicles provide true low-cost alternatives, with natural gas fuel prices in the $2 per gallon range. This NGV Co-Op will allow public and private fleet managers to quickly identify, locate, and purchase a wide range of light-, medium-, and select heavy- duty natural gas vehicles at the best prices through a cooperative bidding process. The vehicles that will be available in this program will include, but are not limited to, natural gas versions of:
  • Honda Civic GX;
  • Chevrolet Express Van
  • Chevrolet Silverado pickup
  • GMC Sierra pickup
  • GMC Topkick
  • Ford E-450 shuttle bus
  • Ford Crown Victoria
  • Ford F-150
  • F-250 pickup
  • Ford Van
  • Ford E-350 cutaway

Currently, the NGV Co-Op is available only in Arizona, Nevada, and California but may expand at a later date. In this time of rapidly rising fuel costs, tight budgets, and vehicle emission regulations, purchasing natural gas vehicles is a sound economic and environmental decision.  Purchasing natural gas vehicles is also an ideal way for fleets to reduce emissions from their vehicles.  Exhaust emissions from a typical NGV are much lower than those from gasoline-powered vehicles. Natural gas vehicles also produce far fewer urban emissions than diesel vehicles. The NGV Co-Op team is currently developing vehicle specifications that will be sent to vehicle dealers. To get more information, fleets and car dealers selling natural gas vehicles can either contact Steve Sokolsky (ssokolsky@calstart.org; 510/307-8772) or Dave Kantor (dkantor@calstart.org 626/744-5611) or sign up on the CALSTART web site at www.calstart.org

San Diego Gets $9 Million for New Natural Gas Buses
San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System will be getting $9 million in state bond money to replace 50 aging diesel-burning buses with new compressed natural gas (CNG) models. The funds are part of the statewide distribution of $136 million in transportation bond money announced by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who noted that such funding "will encourage the use of public transit and give Californians an alternative to rising gas prices." "With the money we're receiving . we are able to retire buses that operate on diesel that are well beyond their useful life and have become very expensive to maintain with newer buses . that burn compressed natural gas for the benefit of the environment," said Harry Mathis, chairman of the Metropolitan Transit System board of directors. SDMTS officials said the 50 new buses will bring the system's fleet to nearly 100% CNG-powered.

Philippines Seeks '100% Use' of CNG Public Transport by 2010
To help ease the burden of the continuing rise in the price of oil on the Philippine's public transport sector, the Philippine Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFR is gearing up for the use of 100% compressed natural gas (CNG) in public utility vehicles by 2010. "By 2010, all buses, taxis, and jeepneys [the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines] should be CNG operated," said LTFRB Chairman Thompson Lantion at a recent press conference. "This will be our direction. We will no longer be dependent on diesel because CNG is made locally, so it is cheaper," he added.

Thailand Purchases 6000 CNG Buses

The government of Thailand approved the purchase of 6,000 CNG buses to be all on the street and running by May 2010 in Bangkok to reduce pollution and counter the high cost of petroleum.  The current CNG buses have shown a savings of half the cost of diesel fuel and will replace buses with no air conditioning.

First NGV Rally in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro organized the first Rally of Natural Gas Vehicles (NGV) "Full Gas Economy", with the aim of spreading the economic and environmental benefits of gaseous fuel. Three identical cars, model Fiat Siena 1.4 liters tetra fuel, will travel 700 kilometers on the circuit Rio - Itatiaia - Rio - Buzios - Rio to compare the performance of NGV, alcohol and petrol. Different specialists will accompany the vehicles throughout the competition, with stops in each city to recharge fuel. The result will be disclosed after the arrival in Rio de Janeiro, where the rally ends. The organizers claim that gas vehicle emits about 25% less toxic than gasoline, and produces significantly lower amounts of carbon dioxide. It also presents minor environmental risks than other fuels as, in the event of accidents, natural gas dissipates into the atmosphere instead of causing hazardous spills that contaminate water reserves and vegetation. Currently, the NGV industry employs about 50,000 people in Brazil.
