OSU to buy 10 alternative fuel vehicles
Oklahoma State University soon will buy 10 alternative fuel sedans for the school's motor pool. The Chevrolet Impala sedans will cost about $160,5000 and will have a compressed natural gas conversion option. OSU transportation services manager Chris Hoffman says the vehicles will be used locally and for trips under 250 miles. He says an original equipment manufacturer in Oklahoma will perform the CNG conversion on the vehicles. OSU President Burns Hargis already has said the university plans to build a CNG fueling station on its Stillwater campus. OSU also is considering buying CNG-powered buses for on-campus use. Hoffman says OSU now has no hybrid vehicles but expects that some will be purchased in the future.
Central Ohio dump producing fuel for cars
Trash is being turned into gas near a landfill outside Columbus, where officials hope the cheap fuel - made from the methane that's naturally given off by rotting garbage - will eventually be used in local buses and other government vehicles. Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio officials said the landfill's new gas-producing facility is capable of processing 300,000 gallons. That's enough to possibly fuel Franklin County's entire fleet of 400 vehicles, said Charlotte Ashcraft, director of fleet management for the county. But it's just a fraction of how much fuel the landfill could produce, considering how much methane is given off by the dump's waste, according to the authority director Ron Mills. About 92 percent of the landfill's methane is allowed to escape through two large venting stacks, he said. A California company, FirmGreen Fuels, plans to invest $14 million to boost capacity even further, officials said. The landfill could produce 10 times more fuel at a cost of about $2 a gallon, only a little cheaper than the $2.50 a gallon for regular gas that many consumers are paying today. But prices could easily rise again toward $4 a gallon, making the landfill-produced fuel even more attractive. "It's not going to be the bargain when gas prices are where they are today," Mills said. "But who expects gasoline prices to stay in that range?" The agency has been using the fuel in several of its vehicles, but Mills' ambition is to also run it in garbage trucks, Central Ohio Transit Authority buses and other local government vehicles.
US Fleet Operators to Consider Natural Gas Benefits: Free Webinar
Source NGV Global
The Natural Gas Vehicle Institute and Alternative Fuel Vehicle institute will offer a series of informative webinars for forward thinking politicians, fleet operators and others pondering the move to natural gas for transportation. The series has been developed in response to the growing buzz around the topic: according to NGVI and AFVI the webinars are designed to seperate fact from fiction and provide a roadmao for fleets interested in natural gas. The first in the series is free and is described as the learning portal to assist decision makers.
Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) have regained traction in recent months in response to fluctuating prices at the pump, increasingly stringent regulations on vehicle emissions and growing pressure to use domestically produced fuel. In fact a recent study by Global industry analysts say natural gas vehicles will be competitive with diesel by 2010. The United States is already seeing signs of those trends with auto makers like Toyota showcasing a hybrid CNG-electric Camry, Westport Innnovations expanding their natural gas engine market, and fueling infrastructure growth all over the country.
NGVI and AFVI launch the four part webinar series beginning on November 5th, that provides fleet managers with the tools they need to determine if natural gas is a good option for them. Leo Thomason, internationally renowned alternative fuels expert, applies his more than twenty years of experience providing technical consulting to fleets to presenting the most comprehensive infomration available on natural gas as a transportation fuel.
You can sign up for "Best in Show: Why Fleets are Flocking to Natural Gas." This free, introductory overview webibar is on Nov 5th, 10:30 AM. The remander of the series will be available for $49.95.

Honda Civic CNG GX Designated Smartway Elite Vehicle
In an endevour to indentify the cleanest cars on American roads, Forbes examined the US Environemntel Protection Agency's scores for air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane). One of the stand-out vehicles was the Honda Civic CNG GX with a pollution score of 9.5 and a greenhouse gas score of 9, enough to earn it a designation of Smartway Elite Vehicle.
Report States That World Natural Gas Vehicles Market To Hit 19.14 Million By 2012
Publish date: Oct 28, 2008
Source- Motor Age
Growth in the world natural gas vehicles (NGVs) market stems from rising concern for the environment, public health, sky rocketing fossil fuel prices and the need to attain national self-sufficiency in meeting energy requirements, according to a new report from Global Industry Analysts, Inc. With several countries encouraging migration from conventional vehicles to alternative fueled vehicles, there exists ample opportunities for growth in this market. The number of NGVs actually plying on the roads is the highest in Latin America. Technology developments and engineering breakthroughs in clean fuel vehicles are together helping NGVs gain deeper market penetration and widespread market acceptance. As NGVs move up the technology lifecycle, prices and costs are expected to soften, making them more affordable over diesel vehicles. By the year 2010, NGVs are expected to competitively compete with their diesel counterparts. The establishment of chain refueling stations, and development of refueling infrastructure in most markets additionally strengthens the business case for NGVs by allowing for easy accessibility to refueling stations, according to the report. Developing countries are expected to offer business opportunities on a platter, given their acute need to gain more energy independence, and reduce expensive imports of petroleum, and improve trade balances.

In general the public have very short memories, take for example the drop in our phone call volume as soon as unleaded prices dipped a little!
Those who are smart know that gas prices will always go back up, and then for others it will suddenly be an emergency again. NGV's in Russia
Did you know there is a Russian NGV Association? Their most recent event was in September and involved a caravan of CNG trucks and cars touring from St Petersburg to Moscow with stops in major cities along the way to promote NGV's and Europe's Blue Corridor. The European community is building a blue corridor across the continent which enables cars, buses and heavy trucks to efficiently travel and fuel across the European Union with natural gas. Sounds like something we should push harder on here!

Get out and vote this Tuesday!

Then keep reminding those elected that we want CNG promoted and we want off of foreign oil!
I feel better about myself lately, I have taken the time to get up a little earlier and walk a mile every morning, it even gives me a little time to read for awhile before I need to get the boys up for school. I guess a little exercise is good for us.
