Children's Exposure to School Bus Emissions Report
Julian D. Marshall and Eduardo Behrentz
Energy and Resources Group, University of California, Berkeley, and Environmental Science and Engineering Program, School of Public Health, University of California, Los Angeles.
Abstract:
Vehicle self-pollution occurs when a vehicle's emissions migrate to inside that vehicle's passenger compartment. This paper presents values for two new parameters: vehicle self-pollution intake fraction (iFSP), which is the total fraction of a vehicle's emissions inhaled by all people in the vehicle, and vehicle self-pollution individual intake fraction (iFi,SP), which is the fraction of a vehicle's emissions inhaled by an individual in the vehicle. We use results from tracer-gas experiments in California's South Coast Air Basin (SoCA to quantify students' iFSP and iFi,SP for school bus emissions. Six buses were studied during nine runs with windows open and seven runs with windows closed. Reported iFSP values (units: per million; min = 10, max = 94, mean = 27) indicate that the total mass of a bus' exhaust inhaled by students commuting on it is comparable in magnitude to the total mass of that bus' exhaust inhaled by all other people in the SoCAB. Reported iFi,SP values (units: per million; min = 0.2, max = 2.4, mean = 0.7) indicate that average per capita inhalation of emissions from any single bus is 105-106 times greater for a student on that school bus than for a typical resident in the SoCAB. Vehicle self-pollution rate varies with bus window position (open or closed) and bus manufacture year. Our results can be used to develop cost-effective strategies to reduce children's exposure to school bus emissions. Our results indicate, for example, that even if emission reductions were many times more expensive per gram emitted for school buses than for an average vehicle, it would still be less expensive per gram inhaled by a student to reduce emissions from school buses than from an average vehicle.

Clean Natural Gas School Buses cure this problem, Protect Our Children!

Clean Energy CNG Price At Sky Harbor Drops

Clean Energy recently lowered their price at Sky Harbor Airport to $2.19 per gallon for Compressed Natural Gas
Our fuel cost at home last month with a Fuelmaker from the City of Mesa Gas Department was $1.07 per gallon from the pipe*. (*Plus electricity)
Speaking of fuel prices
Our current theory is that the refineries produced too much summer blend fuel trying to make as much profit as possible off the high prices, and this is what's being dumped on the market now before the winter blend is required, guess what? When the winter fuel blend comes out, the fuel prices will go back up, maybe not $4.00, but probably over $3.00 per gallon. The winter blend in Arizona is supposed to be cheaper than the summer blend, so we shall see what happens when it changes in November.

FuelMaker Drops Hours of Service Intervals on Phill

FuelMaker Corporation recently announced that every Phill unit produced after Sept 22, 2008, will no longer have a mandatory 6000 hour service interval. It will be up to the customer and local dealers to determine when a unit needs to be refurbished. When units are repaired or refurbished they will in turn no longer have a mandatory service interval. The standard warranty of 1000 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first, coverage will not change.

President-elect Barack Obama's choice for chief of staff may prove a powerful ally to the natural gas industry and expand the use of natural gas-powered vehicles. http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewContent.act?clipid=167982437&mode=cnc&tag=3.5721?icx_id%3D20081107-stolfiler-ok0618
Making a case for natural gas
Fleet Owner

As the price of diesel fuel falls, the allure of a less expensive natural gas system seemingly is falling. Executive director of the Natural Gas Vehicle Institute (NGVI) contends that installing either a compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural for short-haul, light- and medium-duty vehicles. http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewContent.act?clipid=167982436&mode=cnc&tag=3.5475?icx_id%3Dfleetowner.com/fuel_economy/natural_gas_benefits_trucking_1106/index.html

Natural Gas Web Workshop Series
You are invited to take part in an exciting four-part web workshop series on natural gas vehicles and fueling. Presented by Natural Gas Vehicle Institute (NGVi) and Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute (AFVi) this series is designed to separate fact from fiction and provide a roadmap for fleets interested in natural gas. NGVi and AFVi presented the introductory and first webinar in the series - Best in Show: Why Fleets Are Flocking to Natural Gas. Whether you were able to participate or not, you can now watch the entire webinar as a rebroadcast for free. To replay this webinar, click here. The three remaining web workshops will be very detailed - more like mini-training events - providing the details fleet professionals need to make informed decisions. The schedule includes:
December 2
Natural Gas Converts: The Process for Upfitting Vehicles to Run on Natural Gas
December 9:
All Pumped Up: Infrastructure Options for Natural Gas Fleets
December 11:
Other People's Money: Taking Advantage of Credits and Incentives
These web workshops are available for a nominal fee of $49.95 each. For more information and to sign up, click here.

Okay, that's a full post you have here! I was especially interested by the school bus emissions issues. That's why I encourage my children to take their bicycles to school as long as they can, so that they are exercising and staying healthy.

I always enjoy reading your "green" news. The bus company that runs the buses for my children's school has switched all the motors to bio-diesel, and I am really quite happy about that.

This is a very significant blog, about children health. Your discussion here is very reflective to the current situation we had in our community. Natural gas bus will prevent our children from inhaling harmful gases. Keep up the good job in posting very good topics. Thanks for informing about workshop, it will make people aware of advantages of natural gas.

Do you have any scientific data on how cleaner natural gas compared to oil? I'd be curious to know... not that I doubt that it is cleaner, I just want to know the numbers! What's the difference that makes it cleaner?
Natural gas or methane is only one carbon atom. And the fact that it is also always in a gaseous state, you do not have the impurities associated with a liquid fuel!

I wish my bus company would use clean natural gas motors instead of the dirty, smelly petrol ones! Going in the school yard when all the buses are there is really difficult for my children as they have asthma and have trouble breathing.
Clean air is always better for us and the earth!

I wish all bus companies would convert their motors to natural gas. I can't believe the smell in school yards sometimes, especially in June when the weather gets hot. If only they would see the financial and ecological advantages, it would be much easier to convince them.
There is a financial payback over time to drive cleaner, the fuel is cheaper, but it does take time to recover the cost initially to drive with natural gas!

I agree with your thoughts. This would really good step to be taken, in favour of human health as well as for environmental balance. Use of natural gas will definitely keep away our children from breathing diseases.

I am agree with the point you discuss. Thanks for posting such a great article really iam fan of your site.

My children have often complained of headaches when they arrive home from school. They say they didn't have the headaches at school so I assumed the bus. This article confirms what the problem is. I support the move.

I wish my bus company would use natural gas buses. My children have to take the bus to school and sometimes they are a bit woozy, and they always smell like gas. The buses aren't in a very good condition.
