World's Largest Natural gas truck fueling station opens near ports in California
The world's largest natural gas truck fueling station, designed and built by Clean Energy Fuels Corp, is now open for business on a 2.9-acre site adjacent to the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles CA. This new public access station, configured to fuel trucks on a 24/7 basis, features two 25,000-gallon liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, six LNG dispensers, and two compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensers. The Clean Energy station is on property leased from the Port of Long Beach at Anaheim and I streets. It is specifically designed to support the goals of the San Pedro Bay Ports' Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) and Clean Truck programs. The ports' CAAP and Clean Truck programs call for the retirement or conversion of old diesel trucks entering the ports in favor of new diesel and alternative fuel (natural gas) trucks. Natural gas vehicle fuel provides lower emissions than gasoline and diesel, including up to a 23% reduction in greenhouse gases in medium- and heavy-duty applications and up to 30% reductions for light-duty vehicles. The new station is the second that Clean Energy has opened in the area to serve port drayage trucks. The first, operational since December 2007, is near the ports at Southern Counties Express, a major port-trucking firm. This station supplies approximately 10,000 gallons of LNG fuel daily.

Jun 25, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Washington, D.C.- The Science and Technology Committee today unanimously approved three bills with bipartisan support: H.R. 2965, the Enhancing Small Business Research and Innovation Act of 2009; H.R. 2729, to authorize the designation of National Environmental Research Parks by the Secretary of Energy, and for other purposes; and H.R. 1622, to provide for a program of research, development, and demonstration on natural gas vehicles. H.R. 1622 reauthorizes the natural gas vehicle research, development and demonstration program that was created in the 1992 Energy Policy Act. This bill was introduced by Rep. John Sullivan (R-OK) and is cosponsored by Science and Technology Committee Ranking Member Ralph Hall (R-TX) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK). "Natural gas makes sense as a transition fuel, and this bill will help us get more natural gas vehicles on the road," Hall said. "On a well-to-wheels basis, natural gas vehicles produce 22% less greenhouse gases than comparable diesel vehicles and 29% less than gasoline vehicles." In 2007, natural gas vehicles displaced 250 million gallons of petroleum in the U.S. In the next 17 years, the industry's goal is to grow that to 10 billion gallons. Over 60% of the petroleum used in America is imported, while almost 98% of the natural gas used in America is produced in North America - 85% in the U.S. and the rest in Canada. Moreover, last Thursday a report by the Potential Gas Committee showed the United States holds 35% more reserves than the previous report showed in 2006. Committee Member Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA), who has previously driven a natural gas-powered vehicle, praised the goals of H.R. 1622. As the technology for expanded use of natural gas moves forward, Bilbray further encouraged the simultaneous advancement of technologies that would allow vehicle owners to dispense natural gas at home, in order to curb the need for infrastructure to support natural gas fueling stations. Ranking Member Hall also offered an amendment making technical changes to the language in order to avoid potential jurisdictional issues. The amendment passed by voice vote.
Republic Landfill Now Providing Gas to Brewery in Houston, Texas
Republic Services' McCarty Road Landfill in Houston is now supplying landfill gas to a nearby Anheuser-Busch brewery. The gas is processed at a plant that is located at the landfill and is operated by Ameresco.
After being processed, the gas is shipped through a six-mile pipeline to the brewery to help generate steam energy for the brewery's power plant. According to a Republic press release, "more than 55 percent of the brewery's fuel demand will be supplied by this new alternative fuel source."
The press release also states that the environmental benefit of the project "is equivalent to planting more than 121,050 acres of pine or fir trees or taking 97,550 motor vehicles off the road." We need to start doing this more in Arizona for power and for vehicles, there are several projects already working in Arizona and we hope they plan more, especially if we can help with them!!
