Look for full-size General Motors pickups -- Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra -- to be powered by propane (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) as soon as 2012, says Jeffrey Luke, chief engineer for GM's full-size trucks worldwide, in a conversation with USA TODAY at the Detroit auto show.

LPG and CNG can be less expensive to use than gasoline. They burn so cleanly that the fuels are used on work vehicles indoors, such as forklifts inside warehouses.

Conventional gasoline internal-combustion engines can be modified to run on CNG or LPG relatively inexpensively. But those fuels contain less energy than gasoline, so a vehicle has to have a bigger fuel tank to go the same distance. Full-size trucks have enough room to tuck in a big tank, Luke says. "You lose a little payload," but don't ruin the truck's usefulness, he says.

Some trucks are already CNG or LPG powered.

They are mostly heavy duties. And GM standard-duty (a.k.a. "light duty") trucks can be converted by aftermarket companies. But a GM-backed LPG or CNG system could appeal to conservative buyers who want a big company to stand behind the vehicles.

Lukes says GM-built engines for LPG and CNG would have "hardened valve seals and so forth for long-term durability. You could have trouble at 70,000 - 80,000 miles if you don't have the proper materials," he says.

Lukes likes not only the lower cost and lower emissions of LPG and CNG, but also the fact it's another fueling alternative: "These days, we need a diverse fuel portfolio."

CNG/Natural Gas Safety, It's Safer!!

CNG Safety-

It comes as a surprise to many to hear that natural gas is one of the safest vehicle fuels available, CNG is actually safer than gasoline. In its natural state, natural gas is odorless. As a safety measure, the gas is odorized with Mercaptan prior to distribution to provide a ready means of leak detection. An average person can easily detect the smell of gas at a concentration as low as 0.3% by volume in air. That concentration is about 16 times lower than the level which will support combustion.

Natural gas has a high ignition temperature, about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with about 600 degrees Fahrenheit for gasoline. It also has a narrow range of flammability, that is, in concentrations in air below about 5 percent and above about 15 percent, natural gas will not burn. The high ignition temperature and limited flammability range make accidental ignition or combustion of natural gas unlikely.

Natural gas has no known toxic or chronic physiological effects (it is not poisonous). Exposure to a moderate concentration may result in a headache or similar symptoms due to oxygen deprivation but it is likely that the smell would be detected well in advance of concentrations being high enough for this to occur.

The fact that natural gas is lighter than air further enhances its safety. Unlike other fuels such as diesel, gasoline or LPG, which are heavier than air, and pools on the ground creating a fire hazard and potential pollution to waterways. Should a CNG leak occur, the gas will disperse rapidly upwards into the atmosphere and dissipate.

CNG/LNG Fuel Systems - They are "sealed," which prevents any spills or evaporative losses. Even if a leak were to occur in an NGV fuel system, the natural gas would dissipate into the atmosphere because it is lighter than air. Natural gas is not toxic or corrosive and will not contaminate ground water. Natural gas combustion produces no significant aldehydes or other air toxins, which are a concern in gasoline and some other alternative fuels.

CNG Fuel storage cylinders - They are much, much stronger than gasoline/petrol tanks. The design of the cylinders is subject to a number of "severe abuse" tests such as heat and pressure extremes, gunfire, collisions and fire. The systems are also fitted with valves and other safety devices to prevent leakage and eliminate the risk of an explosion - actually making them safer than the legal requirements stipulate.

CNG Cylinder Pressure - As CNG is stored at high pressure, it is often perceived that the high pressure of the product makes it more hazardous than other fuels. While a high pressure gas leak tends to make a lot of noise as the gas is escaping. The resulting high concentrations of gas and its tendency to dissipate upwards make it less likely for the gas in the immediate vicinity of the leak to ignite.

Safe Distribution of natural gas - In most circumstances, natural gas is delivered via underground pipeline networks, the same networks that deliver it to our homes and businesses. This method not only eliminates the need for road tankers to deliver fuel from the refinery, but also the need for ocean going oil tankers to deliver crude oil to the refinery, reducing additional expense or pollution in distribution.

The natural gas delivery system itself also has an excellent and proven safety record. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the natural gas transmission and distribution system is the safest way to transport.

Emissions Tests

I find it interesting that the State of Arizona requires CNG vehicles to be emission tested yearly, even dedicated CNG. It is also frustrating and misleading when they send you the online renewel by email and it lists both the costs for one or two year renewal. If you try to renew online through Service Arizona, it will only let you renew for one year. But if you renew by mail following the instructions and send a check to match what it says about a 2 year renewal, they send it back and tell you that you sent the wrong amount and to send the amount for the one year renewal. I feel discriminated against for having an alt fuel vehicle, why are our renewal periods not the same as a vehicle using foreign oil?? I have to get an emission test every year on all my vehicles. My neighbor doesn't. Last emission test, CO=0, HC=0, 2007 emission test, CO= 0.02/ 3.00 limit, HC= 0.04/ 3.00 limit and this is on a 2004 3/4 ton Chevrolet PU with a 6.0 engine. You would think by now they at least would have fixed the renewal to be accurate. But worrying about clean emissions?? Sounds more like punishment since the yearly emission test was not instituted on AFV's until the 2000 Alt Fuel Credits were cancelled............................................

ALT Fuel Systems in Mesa Closes Down

Long time shop in Mesa closes down, ALT Fuel Systems in Mesa closed its doors recently. Darrel Essary has retired, Mark Brum is working to get a new shop opened up out in Queen Creek. Green Energy Conversions, 480-709-6414. Citing the poor economy and Arizona's lack of support or incentives for alternative fuels, Darrel Essary said it was impossible to stay open. This will leave a void in the Mesa area for a repair shop for alternative fueled vehicle owners.

Pickens Plan now at 21,210 members in Arizona

According to the Pickens Plan website we now have 21,210 members of the New Energy Army in Arizona! Think our legislators will start listening??

The Pickensplan.com and the pushpickens social network announced a goal of 2 million members by the time the Nat Gas Act comes up for a vote in Congress.

Membership is currently over one and a half million members all pushing for independence from foreign oil. There are currently 1,473 groups in the Pickens Community.

Newly released report by the Sustainable Transportation and Communities Group at the Center for Automotive Research.

Using the new efforts by AT & T to roll out CNG and Hybrid vehicles found that over the next 10 years AT & T will save 49 million gallons of gasoline and

trim 211,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the air. The effort will create 1000 jobs and be equal to taking 38,000 vehicles off the road.

Ohio Landfills Making Methane Fuel From Trash

About 40 percent of the country's 1,000 largest landfills, including 11 in Ohio, are collecting and marketing their landfill gases. About 400 acres of the sprawling American Landfill in Stark County in eastern Ohio are perforated with 133 wells that are extracting methane gas. American Landfill, where all of Akron's garbage goes, is one of the state's largest landfills and is part of a growing number of such operations that are capturing the landfill gases. Though carbon dioxide is often identified as the chief cause of the greenhouse effect, methane is far more powerful at trapping heat in the upper atmosphere. Cows are the top source of methane in the United States, accounting for 23.7 percent of emissions followed by landfills, with 22.7 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA said it knows of 485 landfill gas projects in 44 states that together collect 85 billion cubic feet of gas and generate 2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity - about the same as an average U.S. nuclear power plant. One of the largest landfill-gas-to-pipeline facilities in the world is in southwest Ohio at the Rumpke Sanitary Landfill near Cincinnati. That facility recovers 15 million cubic feet of landfill gas a day from three gas-recovery plants operated by Montauk Energy Capital, enough to heat 25,000 households. In the Columbus area, landfill gas from the 142-acre Franklin County landfill is being turned into compressed natural gas to fuel cars and light trucks. The landfill gas from the Grove City site is expected to save 250,000 gallons of gasoline a year. The extraction removes as much as four million cubic feet of gas - enough to heat 6,155 households a day. The process cools and filters the gas, then pushes it through a pipeline to a Dominion East Ohio facility. Dominion blends the landfill extract with natural gas before it is sold by Texas-based Toro Energy to heat homes and factories. American Landfill's gas-extraction system was started in 2003 and produces between 3 million and 4 million cubic feet a day of landfill gas. The landfill has more than 15 million tons of trash already buried and gets a fresh 3,700 tons a day into the 1,072-acre site. The landfill has the capacity to accept trash for another 62 years. Natural Gas Vehicles Offer More Incentives to "Drive Green"

BusinessWire TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Sep 18, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) - Clean, green and readily available, experts are calling natural gas the smart and feasible solution for America's mid-term transportation needs. However, with over 150,000 natural gas vehicles (NGVs) on American roads, over 1,100 NGV fueling stations, and one-in-five of all new transit buses being powered by natural gas, some could argue the future is here. Not only does natural gas cost, on average, 1/3 less at the pump, its environmental benefits are inarguable. Running exclusively on natural gas, the Honda Civic GX has been named "America's Greenest Car" five consecutive years- and boasts virtually no emissions. Due to their positive impact on the environment, NGVs often earn drivers substantial state and local incentives while the Honda Civic GX can qualify buyers for Federal Alternative Motor Vehicle tax credits. Natural gas vehicles also provide superior convenience and safety. While new technology allows NGV drivers to fill their tanks at home, natural gas cars can run on regular gasoline if need be. Plus, in the event of an accident or leak, natural gas dissipates into the air. Gasoline and diesel, on the other hand, pool on the ground, creating a fire hazard.

Midwest Hauler To Use Compressed Natural Gas Trucks

Groot Industries, a hauler that operates in Chicago, will soon incorporate 20 trucks that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) into its fleet. The residential front loaders feature McNeilus bodies mounted on Mack LEU chassis.
The trucks also will come equipped with a fork-mounted carry can that will allow the vehicles to collect residential waste. The driver can disconnect the can, use the forks to pick up commercial containers, reattach the can and continue with the residential route.
"The idea of moving to alterative fuels really appealed to us," said Brian Curry, Groot's director of fleet and facilities. "The natural gas engines meet 2010 emission standards without complex exhaust after treatment, deliver similar fuel economy and offer quiet operation. The price of diesel is getting to the point that it's almost impossible to forecast."

BRC FuelMaker Division of FSS to begin production in new factory in January
